After spending thousands of dollars on hearing aids (HA) and cochlear implants (CI), you think you are good to go, but in reality, you are just beginning. You now have to enter a road to keep your devices alive. I can tell you what will give you the maximum return for your bucks.

The life of your HAs and CIs is determined by how little moisture builds up. The minimal amount of rusts inside the HA and on the electronic parts is the key. Unfortunately, one drop of moisture is enough to make some devices mad and go caput.

But is my device water-resistant?

Water resistance and waterproof are two different things. Despite all the brands claiming, your HAs and CIs are water resistant. This implies you can go outside on a rainy day for a short time and still wear the device in the humidity without damaging it. 

Waterproof means that you can wear your hearing aid 50 feet underwater while scuba diving or while you are snorkling.

Even when you have water resistance HA or CI, you can’t get away with a hearing aid dryer. Very few hearing aids can manage a lot of moisture or water over time.

Until then, save yourself the pain of the extra cost of hundreds of dollars to repair your devices after your hearing device shuts down and your warranty quickly fades away. Hearing aid dryers will help you a lot.

Moisture is everywhere; that’s a situation we can’t control. The electronics’ ability to operate under humidity is next to impossible. If you ever find yourself in the following conditions, you will need a dryer for hearing aids:

• You’re an athlete, work out regularly, or you have a gruelling job where you sweat a lot
• You spend time near a rainfall or the ocean
• You live in a place with high humidity and heat
• You love wearing your hair wet to air dry or spraying the product on your hair
• Your pets can’t stop from eating or chewing your device

If you find yourself in a situation near water, steam, saliva, or sweat, you want to dry your hearing aids often.

How Do I Know It Is Working?

If you are ever wondering how to know if your hearing aids dryer is operating at its best, there are a few key things to keep in mind.

It sounds better.

You will feel you can hear better after having your hearing aid in the hearing aid drying box. If you notice an improved quality of sound and things are clear.

There are no static sound.

This crackling sound appears when your device microphone is turned on. It indicates that moisture has reached too close to the microphone inside.

It should stop once you leave your hearing device in the hearing aid dry kit overnight. You should be able to go for at least a day without a crackling sound.

There is no moisture left in the tube.

If you have a clear, thick tube attached to your earmold and hearing aids, you may occasionally notice a drop of water.

Sometimes, your hearing aids would sound like you are underwater. Moreover, if your dry aid solution works, you should see the water drop in the tube disappear.

The ear wax flakes off.

When using the electronic dry aid specifically, they provide cleaning solutions. If your ear wax seems to be caked hard onto your earmold or hearing aids after usage, chances are you don’t have a device that works well.

But if you find removing wax with a cloth or brush works, you have a perfectly working solution that doesn’t require an electronic dehumidifier.

I could never understand how people drop their smartphones in the toilet, but I am amazed that they can get them back working and in order.

One thing that many people do when coffee or water damages their computers and smartphones is to put rice in a bag and cover their device with uncooked rice all over.

You can do the same, but place your hearing aids in a bag full of rice instead of your device. Just remember where you place them before you cook them in hot, boiling water.

Another trick you can do is to buy silica gel packets, insert them into a Ziploc bag, and place your hearings inside.

UV-ray does nothing for me.

The UV-ray electronic device appears to be a hearing aid’s tanning bed that does nothing to help my hearing aids dry out the sweat for my intense workout or heavy moisture environment. I like to stay fit, and I’m not letting my hearing aid get damaged.

I wonder if this was designed for people who have excess wax issues—those who need to clean their ears with a specialist on a monthly basis. Since I have a moderate to low amount of wax built up, it might be the reason why the UV rays didn’t work.

You can travel with your hearing aid drying kit to the airport.

Don’t worry about your dry-aid kits being picked up for extra screening by the TSA or security at the airport. I’ve travelled to many places, and like my hearing aids, they never get picked up by security, even when no liquid or cosmetics are allowed onboard. 

I love my Hal-Hen Mini Super Dri Aid. I’ve owned mine for over 20 years, and it performs better than others. I spent $200 on a dry box for hearing aids and bought the dry capsule, but neither did anything for me.

Don’t worry about stacking your hearing aids or cochlear implants.

You may think that your hearing aids should be laying flat. Sometimes, depending on the hearing aid drying kit, say if it is a hearing aid dry box or hearing aid drying capsules, you may have to stack your hearing aids on top of each other to put into the container.

Once the container is sealed tight, the moisture will be removed from both hearing aids. The best hearing aid dryer has little to do with laying the hearing aid flat to remove moisture.

There should be minimal maintenance.

The only maintenance you will need to do every so often is to reheat the metal case in the oven. When too much moisture has been collected from your hearing aid, the hearing aid dehumidifier beads inside turn pink. Once in the oven, the pink beads turn blue.

The only thing is that you will need to let your metal container cool before putting it back into the plastic container or resting on your hearing aid. So, make it a weekend early morning task to ensure your hearing aids or cochlear implants are ready to store overnight.

A hearing aid dryer cost shouldn’t be expensive.

A hearing aid dryer cost as low as twenty dollars to as high as a couple of hundreds of dollars.

I personally don’t invest too much money in hearing aid dehumidifiers. I would rather invest the money in a good hearing aid brand and service.

We are lucky that there are low cost and also effective solutions without needing to spend so much money on a device that might break in a couple of years.
